#AMillionDecisions – March Update

Is there anyone out there who hasn’t heard about the campaign A Million Decisions?

I really hope not but I know how busy we all are delivering our excellent services so thought an update on how the campaign is unfolding would be useful plus give inspiration for those, like me, who may be slow starters.

Highlights so far

  • Social media activity peaked on 30 January, reaching approx 1 million accounts, including over 630k via the Thunderclap.
  • Promotion of the campaign to MPs and Lords and the Libraries Minister at the launch of the Libraries All Party Parliamentary Group on 31 January.
  • Campaign briefings distributed to health library and knowledge services and numerous partner bodies and contacts.
  • Support from clinical colleagues, including Dr Girendra Sadera at the Wirral; Dr Johnny Marshall OBE, the Westongrove Partnership.

National-Level Activities since the launch

  • Sharing the campaign and making initial approaches to meet with a range of representatives from key arms-length and stakeholder organisations
  • Ongoing conversations with influential individuals including approaches to parliamentarians
  • Media announcement sent to national press and health based publications
  • Support from Professors Ian Cumming and Wendy Reid
  • Campaign postcard distributed to MPs and Lords with a tailored message including an illustrative case study
  • Session at the CILIP East and Health Libraries Group event, 2 March focusing on the campaign in action
  • Sharing the campaign with other regions – with commitment from Scotland to run a follow-up campaign and potential interest from Wales and Ireland.


Local level activities – your involvement

  • Locally arranged meetings with senior executives to discuss the policy and campaign – highlighting the support library and knowledge services can offer to all decision making in NHS orgs
  • Tweets illustrating high-impact work that we do – thank you to @GEHLibrary for producing a variety of Storify stories about #AMillionDecisions
  • Modification of posters and flyers to create displays across the country
  • Adapting the main messages of the campaign to write locally focused articles in Trust newsletters and bulletins
  • Local sign-up campaigns inviting your users to tweet about their experiences of using your service
  • Publicity about the campaign on a range of social media accounts
  • Library and individual e-mail accounts using the auto-signature

If like me you have been slow to start don’t worry, there is still plenty of time to do some of the activities listed.

Key actions for March

The focus of the campaign this month is around access.  Are there local health orgsanisations near you that don’t have access to a library and knowledge service?  Make preparations now to approach them.

  • Encourage your clinical and managerial colleagues to share their experiences of library and knowledge services support
  • Discuss with your Strategic Lead how to approach organisations and extend your service offer to help all health organisations meet their commitments under the Act.
  • Make sure you have some local examples of the high-level impact of your service – use the Value and Impact Toolkit to give you some ideas about how best to achieve this.
  • Continue to tweet and publicise the campaign. Be creative at getting the message across.
  • Update your service users and stakeholders on the progress of the campaign.
  • Use the Learning Zone and the PKSB for Health to enhance the skills you need to advance the campaign
  • Take a look at the re-designed CILIP website and make sure you are getting full benefit from membership
