Development Needs Analysis Launched – Deadline Extended to 27 January 2017

Knowledge for Healthcare is shaping the future of health library and knowledge services. Approval of the NHS Library and Knowledge Services in England policy underlines HEE’s commitment to ensuring the development of proactive knowledge services to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving NHS workforce.   We must make sure that the healthcare library and knowledge workforce develops at the same pace so our own development needs must be identified and met.

Combined with the launch of the PKSB for the Health in summer 2016, our professional development is at the fore like never before.

With that in mind, we are very pleased to invite you to complete this survey.

Previous surveys have shown us what your development needs are. This time we want to take it to the next level, giving you the opportunity to set out not only your priorities, but also which particular aspects are most important to you and also how you prefer to learn.

Your input will help shape the direction of professional development across England and your region.  It will also help you to identify your development needs, reflect on how you like to learn and review your personal development plan.

Build your leadership skills with the NHS Leadership Academy

If you are looking to build your leadership skills in a health and care context, at your own pace, while being part of a supportive online community, the Edward Jenner Programme from the NHS Leadership Academy could be for you.

Aimed at staff fairly new to leadership, the programme is open to everyone, working at any level, in a health and social care context and offers a first step into leadership. The learning offers a mix of theory and practice delivered online and can therefore be undertaken at a time and place suited your needs.  Furthermore, as it is an NHS course, the examples provided are NHS specific and therefore easier to relate to our own work.

Colleagues who serve NHS staff but are employed by Higher Education Institutions or Local Authorities are equally welcome to sign up.

The programme is made up of three elements:

  • Launch – offers and introduction to leadership and a chance for self-reflection.  It is designed to take about 5 hours to complete
  • Foundations – offers more about the theory and practice of leadership with real-life examples taken from health and social care.

Both these elements are free to access and undertaken online through a mixture of film, activities and discussions.   Following completion of the Foundation module participants are invited to complete a short written piece reflecting on learning from the programme which results in being entered for a NHS Leadership Academy award in Leadership Foundations.

For those who complete Launch and Foundations and wish to go further with the programme a third module is available.

  • Advanced – offers further online learning and three face-to-face one-day workshops, taking around three months to complete.

Unlike the first two modules which are free to complete, this module incurs a fee of £350.

Roll the drums and sound the trumpets the Professional Knowledge and Skills Base for Health has arrived

Launched at the CILIP Conference on the 12th July 2016, the Professional Knowledge and Skills Base (PKSB) for Health (login required) is now available.

If only there was a way of encapsulating the broad range of skills and knowledge required to develop the health library and knowledge workforce to meet current and future needs?  Over the last year the Competencies Task and Finish Group have worked with CILIP to create an enriched version of the CILIP PKSB which has examples from a health setting throughout.

The Group have scrutinised every word in the CILIP PKSB and interpreted it for a health setting.  We have also had lengthy debates about what constitutes a competency and the differences between knowledge, skills, values and behaviours.  We have looked at numerous other examples of competency and value frameworks for different professions and have worked tirelessly to produce a tool that can be used by anyone working in the health library and knowledge sector, whatever their role.

The PKSB for Health will only be of use if it is embraced by the whole health library and knowledge workforce and as such we would like to encourage you to take a look and start using the self- assessment tool to plan your own personal development.   Don’t panic – there is no expectation that an individual will have the same level of skills and knowledge across the whole of the Professional Knowledge and Skills Base for Health.  The level of knowledge and skills will vary depending upon your role.

How can it help you?

  • As a self-assessment tool it can help you to plan your personal development and be used as part of the process of gaining professional registration and revalidation by CILIP
  • It can be used to demonstrate your unique skill set to employers and enhance their understanding of the competencies required by library and knowledge staff
  • It can be used to inform role and service redesign, staff training and be used to support staff recruitment and retention
  • It can be used by managers as part of the appraisal and talent management process
  • It will be used to support workforce planning and development at local, regional and national level.

Practical suggestions to get you started:

  • Read and share with colleagues the brochure –  The Professional Knowledge and Skills Base for Health
  • Read the full Professional Knowledge and Skills Base for Health
  • Use the self-assessment ratings to score your level of knowledge and skills
  • Identify any areas that you want to develop and think about how you might do that – the Learning Zone may help here
  • Share the PKSB for Health with your employer or line manager and colleagues.
  • Consider using it with your line manager as a way of jointly identifying areas which you want to develop

The second Competencies Task and Finish Group have met to discuss the second phase of their work which will consider additional tools to supplement the PKSB for Health and create resources for role reconfiguration– more of this in a future post.
