Copyright

NHS library staff in England may copy and share extracts from most printed and digital work in these ways:

1. CLA Licence Plus

  • This is the agreement signed between the Copyright Licensing Agency and the Department of Health and Social Care for the NHS in England.
  • Download and display the licence  and the Copying Guidelines poster.
  • Use the Check Permissions Tool to find out whether what you want to copy is covered by the Licence.

2. Copyright Act & ‘Library Privilege’

Updated guidance from your NHS Copyright First Responders!

With the arrival of the new CLA Licence Plus for the NHS in England in April, and new recruits to the Copyright First Responders’ Group, we’ve taken the opportunity to review and refresh the guidance we provide for healthcare library staff at http://www.libraryservices.nhs.uk/forlibrarystaff/information/nhs_copyright.html.

The actual changes to the Licence are small – hospice staff are now covered, we may now place bulletins containing journal article/database abstracts on our websites, and we have a new supplier of Copyright Fee Paid articles (Reprints Desk) alongside the existing ones (BL and the RSM Library). But we’ve been through all the guidance with fresh eyes, to see where we might make things clearer or present information differently.

The updated resources include:

We have also made a slight modification to the good practice guidelines for current awareness services, in the section on IPR and copyright.

If you haven’t looked at these resources for a while, do consider finding time to do so. And if you have a copyright query, you know where we are! nhscopyrightqueries@libraryservices.nhs.uk

NHS Copy Aid Launches

A year ago this month, the NHS Copyright First Responders service was launched to help NHS Library staff navigate their way through copyright issues and help in the provision of document supply. In that time we have continued to update the guidance available at   http://www.libraryservices.nhs.uk/forlibrarystaff/information/nhs_copyright.html while responding to specific queries received through the nhscopyrightqueries@libraryservices.nhs.uk email.

The queries we receive have informed further enhancements we will be making to the guidance over the coming months and the first of these is available now.  NHS Copy Aid is a new tool designed by Ian Rennie, one of the Copyright First Responders, which will assist in supplying articles in order to meet your users’ needs and meet legal and licencing requirements. Answering a few simple questions will allow you to determine the appropriate licence based on the user, their needs and the source of the document.
So please give NHS Copy Aid a try at http://www.libraryservices.nhs.uk/forlibrarystaff/information/nhs_copyright.html and we welcome any feedback along with you copyright queries to nhscopyrightqueries@libraryservices.nhs.uk.
