Build your leadership skills with the NHS Leadership Academy

If you are looking to build your leadership skills in a health and care context, at your own pace, while being part of a supportive online community, the Edward Jenner Programme from the NHS Leadership Academy could be for you.

Aimed at staff fairly new to leadership, the programme is open to everyone, working at any level, in a health and social care context and offers a first step into leadership. The learning offers a mix of theory and practice delivered online and can therefore be undertaken at a time and place suited your needs.  Furthermore, as it is an NHS course, the examples provided are NHS specific and therefore easier to relate to our own work.

Colleagues who serve NHS staff but are employed by Higher Education Institutions or Local Authorities are equally welcome to sign up.

The programme is made up of three elements:

  • Launch – offers and introduction to leadership and a chance for self-reflection.  It is designed to take about 5 hours to complete
  • Foundations – offers more about the theory and practice of leadership with real-life examples taken from health and social care.

Both these elements are free to access and undertaken online through a mixture of film, activities and discussions.   Following completion of the Foundation module participants are invited to complete a short written piece reflecting on learning from the programme which results in being entered for a NHS Leadership Academy award in Leadership Foundations.

For those who complete Launch and Foundations and wish to go further with the programme a third module is available.

  • Advanced – offers further online learning and three face-to-face one-day workshops, taking around three months to complete.

Unlike the first two modules which are free to complete, this module incurs a fee of £350.

A fantastic opportunity to develop your leadership skills – a free one year programme for 2016/17 – applications close on Monday 21 December

What is the Knowledge for Healthcare Leadership Development Programme? We are launching an exciting opportunity for those who wish to develop and strengthen their effectiveness as they take on a variety of leadership roles. Delivered in partnership with CILIP, on behalf of Health Education England a new leadership programme, specifically for healthcare librarians and knowledge specialists who provide services to staff who work for the NHS, starts in March next year.

What is the Knowledge for Healthcare Leadership Development Programme? This new programme is being delivered in partnership with CILIP, on behalf of Health Education England. It has been designed to strengthen our capability to lead the ambitious changes envisioned within Knowledge for Healthcare. Based on a model already piloted by CILIP, the programme has been tailored specifically for healthcare librarians and knowledge specialists who provide services to staff who work for the NHS

Who is it for? This programme is not just for those with formal leadership responsibility; it is for those who wish to develop and strengthen their effectiveness as they take on a variety of leadership roles.

The programme is targeted at mid-career professionals so although we welcome applications from all experience levels we believe it will be of most benefit to individuals who have some leadership experience and are looking to build on this for the future.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Identify different leadership styles; reflect on their appropriateness in different situations
  • Reflect on their own preferred personal leadership style and its effectiveness in different working environments to influence and inspire others
  • Consider leadership in context for different organisations (i.e. governance, culture, policies)
  • Appreciate approaches to strategic thinking, change management and evaluation
  • Understand the importance of stakeholder engagement and the requirements of project management
  • Show an understanding of the leadership skills needed to develop the application of knowledge management in healthcare settings
  • Build upon experience, skills and knowledge developed through the programme and engagement with a wide range of experienced professionals to drive innovation and improvement
  • Identify their leadership development needs and how consider how to address these, and understand the opportunities available through the NHS Leadership Academy.

Programme details: The programme will utilise different methods of learning, including face-to-face and virtual elements. There will be a combination of workshops, webinars, videos, reading and discussions around a variety of topics relating to leadership throughout the programme.

In addition to these learning opportunities, each participant will take an active role in:

  • Group project work – delivering an assigned project, with others, on behalf of Knowledge for Healthcare. The group project will enable individuals to strengthen their leadership skills to deliver a piece of work, and implement change, as well as enabling experience of leading within the group environment.
  • Action Learning Set – held throughout the programme, supporting group project work and personal development.

Personal development planning will focus predominantly on the relevant areas of the CILIP Professional Knowledge and Skills Base, to identify needs and approaches to address these at both a personal level and organisational level.

Resource Commitment

Time: We estimate that individuals will need to set aside 2-3 days per month, to engage in the programme and meet their personal development needs. At times through the year the project plan agreed by each group may require a greater commitment.

Costs: There is no fee for taking part in this programme, which is being funded by HEE as part of its commitment to implementing Knowledge for Healthcare. All delegates are expected to make their own arrangements to cover the cost of travel and accommodation, as needed. See also the HEE Statement regarding travel or accommodation expenses.

Give examples of where you have taken leadership roles, whether in a professional or personal setting. Tell us what you learned from each one. Are there are there things you would do differently now? Which leadership behaviours worked well?

How might you apply the learning in practice?

Where do you see your career options? How do you intend to get yourself ready?

Application Guidance: By submitting your application you are demonstrating a personal commitment to fully participate in the programme. This includes attendance at each of the compulsory face-to-face workshops and action learning set meetings.

  • Commitment to the NHS and to the library and information profession
  • Commitment to delivering Knowledge for Healthcare
  • Ambition to strengthen leadership skills, and effectiveness in role
  • Commitment to reflective practice
  • Commitment to applying new knowledge and skills
  • An ability to demonstrate flexibility, self-awareness and authenticity
  • Career ambition – and being clear that careers take many shapes and paths  

Application Deadline: Applications must be received by 21st December 2015 at 5pm.

Application Notification: Applicants will be notified regarding the outcome of their application by the week beginning 18th January 2016.
